Working with small formats and colours I pick intuitively (read randomly - it's a good way to use colour combinations you might not choose if you have a plan).

"Give me books, fruit, French wine and fine weather, and a little music out of doors, played by someone I do not know" - John Keats

I'm on the French wine right now.

Preparation - expectation

I have been taking pictures in preparation for a new illustration project. This is purely for myself at this stage (and might remain so), something to play with. One of my students asked me the other day what I was working on at the moment, and I realised that I have been working on commissions mainly. Of course I am very grateful to be in that position; however, it made me think that it would be nice to work on something else parallel to the other projects. During the days of glorious weather recently I rediscovered places close to where I live and I want to capture them in drawings and/or watercolours. Pictures to follow!

Reverence

"All my experience as a psychologist leads me to the conclusion that a sense of reverence is necessary for psychological health. If a person has no sense of reverence, no feeling that there is anyone or anything that inspires awe, it cuts the conscious personality off completely from the nourishing springs of the unconscious. It is ironic, then, that so much of our modern culture is aimed at eradicating all reverence, all respect for the high truths and qualities that inspire a feeling of awe and worship in the human soul." -Robert Johnson (epigraph to Chapter 6, The Reenchantment of Art, Suzi Gablik, Thames and Hudson, London 2002)

Ink

I rediscovered peat brown ink and am playing around with it, on tiny pieces of paper. I like the smooth, almost glossy finish of the ink where it collects at the edges of a blob. It is great to have daylight in the evenings - I've been spending much more time at my desk.
