This is the second story in the Jumbo trilogy. As you can see Jumbo not only discovers Giraffeland, but also meets some zebras along the way.
The Jumbo stories were written by Lionel Gallagher and illustrated by me.
The beautiful design and layout are by the very talented artist and graphic designer Conor Gallagher, who added washes in different colours for the respective groups of animals - burnt orange for the giraffes.

Zooming in on details from some sketches for a lovely project I am lucky to be working on
I cannot believe that this is the fifth COLOURS Fringe Festival!
For the artwork I just had to include the little dog again, in a prominent place this time - he first appeared in the second year, and since then he's been a constant, along with the bowler hat and a striped garment of some sort. This year there will be a lampshade exhibition and a knitting event for Wool against Weapons, hence the presence of lampshades and a long pink scarf.
The festival kicks off on Tuesday. For more information see www.coloursfringe.com. We are also on facebook.
Productivity, fuelled by multiple beverages. Lots of great films for this year's Reel Lives film festival!
We had our book launch for Jumbo Wants to be a Hippo earlier this month, as part of the 'Writers present...' event for Múscailt, the Spring Arts Festival at NUI Galway.
Lionel and I talked about how the story and our collaboration developed, and Lionel read an excerpt (video to follow!). We also played the wonderful song "Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud", which features in the book, and had tea and cake. It was such a warm, cosy atmosphere, and we were delighted people turned up despite the apocalyptic weather. The third person involved in the making of the book couldn't make the launch - Conor Gallagher, who did the design and layout and colour washes, and without whom Jumbo would still be a pile of paper and an idea.
Thank you to everyone who made this book and the event possible, to everyone who has bought the book, and to the lovely audience! Special thanks to Fionnuala Gallagher, Deirdre Lydon and Rab Fulton.
If you want to purchase a copy, please contact me via the Contact page above. Thank you! The book is also available in various bookshops in Galway, Sligo and Dublin, including Charlie Byrne's in Galway City.
This is the first story in a trilogy, and parts 2 and 3 will be out soon!
Artwork for festival brochure/poster. Acrylic on paper
This year's theme is Laugh | Nourish | Love. The festival launch is on Monday, January 27th at 5pm in the Cube, Áras na Mac Léinn, NUI Galway. Special guest Dr. Kieran O'Conor will launch the festival.
Reception and entertainment. All welcome!
Just a little preview... Cats are still a recurring theme (and will always be, I have a feeling).

Jumbo Wants to be a Hippo is the first book in a trilogy written by Lionel Gallagher and illustrated by me.
Conor Gallagher did the design and put it all together and added the lovely subtle colour to my drawings, 'colour-coding' the different animals.
This collaboration has been so much fun. Thank you to everyone who has bought the book so far; we really appreciate your support. I have copies to sell here in Galway (price: 7,50 euro); e-mail me if you would like to purchase a book.
Long Walk, Galway. Watercolour pencils on paper - work in progress
And oh, what fun it is! I am enjoying drawing details such as ropes and chains. This is the first in a series of Galway illustrations I have embarked on (no pun intended).
